GHANA Constructed by the Portuguese in 1482, Ghana’s Elmina Castle is now a popular tourist spot and a World Heritage site. It was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea by European explorers, and became infamous in the 17th century as a depot where slaves were bartered.
