A joint collaboration between Zambia and Zimbabwe will see the launch of a US$5 billion hydroelectricity project.

The 1 600 MW Batoka Gorge project is expected to mitigate power shortages across the two countries and has the potential to supply other countries in the region too, as reported by Asoko Insight.

Expected to create 6 000 jobs, the development is part of several new Zimbabwean electricity generation projects. One of these, which will add 600 MW to the national grid, is the US$1.5 billion Hwange Power Station Unit 7 and 8 scheme.

While the country currently produces 1 200 MW of electricity, peak demand is around 1 400 MW.
