Last year, South Africa accounted for 4% of global wine production, with the industry contributing ZAR36 billion (or 1.2%) to the country’s economy. Over the past decade, its exports have grown from less than 50 million litres in 1994 to more than 422 million litres in 2014.

South Africa’s vineyards span nearly 100 000 ha, resulting in the country being the seventh-largest wine producer worldwide.

Furthermore, according to a CNBC Africa report, wine tourism is also an important economic generator for South Africa, bringing in ZAR6 billion per year alone.
