In Ethiopia, drilling for two geothermal power stations is set to start.

ESIAfrica reports that the projects at Tulu Moye, in the Main Ethiopia Rift, and Hawassa, in central Ethiopia, will be the country’s first independent power stations.

The UK’s Marriott Drilling Group has already acquired two new drilling rigs, which are being shipped to Ethiopia.

It has also secured working capital for the four-year duration of the operation and to support the 160 technical staff required across the two sites.

According to David Jones of Marriott, the projects ‘will be critical to the deployment of renewable energy to meet Ethiopia’s growing electricity needs, and we are delighted to play our part’.

Tulu Moye has a target installed capacity of 150 MW (electrical) to be achieved in three phases of 50 MWe each, reports Afrik21.
