Launching pad A new container facility that will benefit the Western Cape’s agricultural exports has opened in Cape Town. The ZAR60 million first phase of Grindrod’s ZAR200 million United Container Depots facility in Salt River, near the Port of Cape Town, will be able to accommodate 5 000 twenty-foot equivalent units. The 40 000 m2 site also offers 240 refrigerated container power outlets, reports Engineering News. The full project will span 63 000m2 and will include a rail link and a bulk minerals site. The Western Cape’s Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Ivan Meyer, noted the first phase of the project was completed within five months, despite the fact that it involved the removal of asbestos both above and below ground. He said the depot would help the province achieve its goal of tripling exports by 2035, which required a ‘working logistics chain’. 21 October 2025 Image: Unsplash
