Mozambique is laying the foundations for its transition to renewable energy.

ITWeb Africa reports that the country’s national energy regulator, Autoridade Reguladora de Energia (Arene), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Renewable Energy Solutions for Africa (RES4Africa) foundation. The MoU lays out a framework for accelerating renewable energy adoption and modernising Mozambique’s regulatory environment.

The two institutions will co-operate on developing large capacity-building projects, knowledge transfer and critical regulatory reforms. A series of workshops and training programmes will focus on, among other things, the methodology of power purchase agreement tariffs.

‘This MoU with Arene represents an important step towards supporting Mozambique’s energy transition by investing in institutional capacity, promoting regulatory excellence, and fostering dialogue among key stakeholders,’ said RES4Africa secretary-general  Roberto Vigotti.

The foundation – created in 2012 to support Sustainable Development Goal 7 (to ‘ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all’) – is a network of stakeholders in the clean energy sector from Africa and Europe.

Paulo da Graça, chairman and CEO of Arene, said the partnership with RES4Africa will promote regulatory policies that attract private investment. ‘[It] will enhance the exchange of knowledge, experience and international best practices in the energy sector,’ he said.
