Vital links Mozambique is planning to build a 1 300 km electricity highway from the Tete province in the north-west of the country to its capital in Maputo. The corridor, including two 400 kilovolt transmission lines, will link the planned Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric scheme to the rest of the country and will also transmit electricity from other renewable sources. The US$1.4 billion project is also expected to boost industrial development along the corridor, reports Club of Mozambique. It will be financed with support from the World Bank, the AfDB, the European Investment Bank and the European Union. The transmission lines will be managed by national utility Electricidade de Moçambique and forms part of the National Strategy for the Promotion of Clean Energy, Industrialisation, Universal Access to Electricity and Regional Integration. ‘It will be the appropriate solution not only for Mphanda Nkuwa, but also to prepare the system for the future in terms of new renewable power plants, drawing on hydroelectric potential as well as fossil fuels such as gas,’ a government representative was quoted as saying. 26 May 2026 Image: Unsplash
