Smart centre South Africa’s Western Cape province is positioning itself as a globally competitive artificial intelligence (AI) technology hub. The provincial government and the South African AI Association (SAAIA) have joined forces to establish the Western Cape AI Cluster (WCAIC), a three-year project to build a sustainable AI ecosystem, reports Africa Business Communities. Cutting across private, public, academic and civil society interests, the WCAIC will fall under the province’s Technology Ecosystem Enablement programme. Its focus will be on AI policy, responsible AI, governance, infrastructure, AI factories and sovereign AI. Among the cluster’s immediate priorities are developing AI sovereignty and the upcoming launch of the Cape Town AI Factory. ITWeb reported in May that Cassava Technologies’ first AI factory in South Africa is set to go live in the near future . ‘It is a globally significant challenge for nations, provinces, cities and municipalities to develop, deploy and govern AI systems independently,’ said Nick Bradshaw, chairman of SAAIA. The WCAIC is also convening a new annual event, Activate SA, scheduled for Cape Town from 25 to 27 August 2026. The government and citizen-led conference is designed to bring the responsible AI debate to the wider public. 2 June 2026 Image: Unsplash
