Nigeria’s plans to build 3 700 telecommunications towers in underserved communities across the country has attracted support from the China Investment Bank (CIB).

As part of its first investment in the country, CIB has committed to helping Nigeria deploy at least 1 000 towers through the Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project (Nucap).

Nucap as a whole is aiming to bring connectivity to 20 million Nigerians in rural, riverine and hard-to-reach areas, reports ITWeb Africa.

The minister of communications, innovation and economy, Bosun Tijani, described Nucap as a ‘green’ telecommunications network that would underpin the sustainable growth of digital infrastructure while bridging long-standing access gaps in remote communities.

Telecom companies in Nigeria have also committed to upgrading 12 000 network sites this year, including the migration of old 2G and 3G infrastructure to more advanced 4G and 5G systems.
