Bond bonanza In a bid to support access to financing for small businesses in Tanzania, the International Finance Corporation has listed the largest-ever Tanzanian shilling-denominated bond on the international markets. The five-year bond, worth US$100 million, carries a 7.6% coupon. Its proceeds will finance a TZS262.5 billion loan to NMB Bank, enabling it to finance micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), 20% of which must be women-owned. Africa Business Communities reports that the financing will help businesses secure long-term local currency funding while reducing exposure to foreign exchange risk. The financing arrangement is in line with Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050, which outlines the country’s ambition to become a upper-middle-income country through private-sector-led growth. According to NMB Bank, the commercial microfinance bank has one of the largest banking networks in Tanzania, with 248 branches and a customer base of more than 10 million. 28 July 2026 image: Unsplash
