Big spender There is good news for shoppers in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga. The town, formerly known as Witbank, is the site of a new mall: the 37 000m2 Jumbo Mall, which is set to open in March 2026, reports Daily Investor. Located in Blesboklaagte on a 120 000m² site near the N4 and only 500m from the CBD, the mall is expected to support more than 800 permanent jobs. A report in Real Estate Investor suggests the ‘community-driven retail hub’ will cost ZAR1.2 billion. It is being developed by New Africa Developments (NAD) with investment from Investec. ‘Jumbo Mall has been conceived not just as a shopping destination, but as a shared community space that brings people together,’ says NAD CEO Japie van Niekerk. ‘Every design decision – from the architectural language to the tenant mix – was made with the goal of creating an inclusive, uplifting environment that reflects the energy of eMalahleni.’ The mall’s anchor tenants are Boxer, Shoprite, Dis-Chem and Clicks, while other brands include Mr Price, Foschini, Jet, Ackermans, Pep, Sterns, American Swiss and Torga Optical. The project will also offer 1 500 free parking bays and dedicated taxi facilities. Its green technologies include a solar PV installation, supported by backup generators; a state-of-the-art building management system; LED lighting; and energy-efficient air-conditioning. 28 October 2025 Image: Unsplash
