A new subsea fibre cable from Kenya to Oman is expected to strengthen digital trade links between East Africa and the Middle East.

Facebook parent company, Meta, has chosen Kenyan telecoms giant Safaricom as its landing partner for the cable system, which will complement Meta’s 45 000 km 2Africa cable.

Techcabal reports that the new US$23 million Daraja (meaning bridge in Swahili) system will be fully funded by Meta subsidiary Edge Network Services.

The 24-fibre-pair design is expected to ensure high-capacity, low-latency connectivity that will enhance the performance of Meta’s platforms, especially because the cable avoids the congested Red Sea corridor.

Meta says local operators in Kenya and Oman will be contracted to operate the cable segment within territorial waters and associated in-country infrastructure.
