Ghana is looking to nuclear as a major source of the nation’s power production by 2029.

According to an Asoko Insight report, this follows the growing demand ‘on petroleum products to power thermal plants for the provision of electricity’, which is why the government is exploring alternate energy sources to ensure installed capacity can meet peak demand. The country was subject to recurring power crises between 2012 and 2016.

The Ghanaian government has established a nuclear regulatory authority to direct the implementation of the country’s nuclear programme (NPP).

Ghana has already successfully completed the first of three phases stipulated by the International Atomic Energy Agency before commencement of a nuclear programme. Phase 1 comprises 19 requirements, all of which were passed.

With a potential contribution of 1 200 MW per plant, nuclear is being considered a viable option in diversifying Ghana’s energy mix.
