Ghana has taken another step towards adding next-generation nuclear power to its energy mix.

The West African nation is partnering with the US’ Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) programme, through which the competencies of Nuclear Power Ghana (which was established in 2018) will be further developed. This forms part of the country’s goal to build and safely operate its first nuclear power plant, according to the US embassy.

The FIRST programme will support Ghana’s adoption of small modular reactor technology, and provide stakeholder engagement, advanced technical collaboration as well as project evaluation and planning.
