A South African auto parts manufacturer is hoping to save about ZAR35 million a year in electricity costs through a 20-year solar energy deal.

Moneyweb reports that Atlantis Foundries near Cape Town, Western Cape, will replace up to 20% of its electricity consumption through the solar deal, also saving more than 22 000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

According to the agreement, which will come into effect in May 2024, Energy Partners will engineer, finance, construct and operate the solar energy plant at the foundry in Atlantis.

The system will comprise more than 20 000 ground-mounted solar panels – with a total rated capacity of 13.5 MWp.

According to the group, the solar plant ‘will be the Western Cape’s largest embedded generation solar project’, and also possibly the highest CO2 emissions-saving project in the South African motor industry.
