A ZAR4.3 billion expansion at the harbour of Cape Town will see the repurposing of about 30 hectares of underused land owned by Transnet National Ports Authority.

It is hoped the expansion will alleviate congestion at the harbour, particularly for the export-oriented agricultural sector, reports Moneyweb.

Rajesh Dana, TNPA’s acting executive for the western region, said the 30 ha ‘will be used to build new warehousing and other back-of-harbour services and facilities’, with ZAR2.5 billion allocated to this part of the project.

About ZAR1.8 million of the capex will be allocated to the purchase of new cranes and other harbour equipment.

Recent developments aimed at improving port infrastructure for fresh produce exporters include a collaboration between the Western Cape government, Transnet Port Terminals and a number of private concerns to supply two high-capacity generators and mobile plug points to enhance the capacity of the container terminal.

‘We look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on fresh produce exports from the Western Cape and to continuing our collaboration with the Western Cape government and Transnet Port Terminals to drive growth and development in the sector,’ Agbiz CEO Theo Boshoff said of the public-private partnership.
