Extra eyes Nigeria is recruiting artificial intelligence (AI) to help tighten fiscal discipline in its customs service. It is hoped the AI programme will improve revenue collection and repair long-standing leakages in the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), according to Africa Business Communities. Officials say AI tools will be used to analyse trade patterns, detect anomalies, and flag potential revenue losses in real time. The AI system is expected to help detect under-declaration of goods and smuggling, long-time thorns in the side of the service. The NCS is already deploying AI in cargo scanning and risk management systems, where machine learning can help identify suspicious shipments and improve classification of goods. 21 April 2026 Image: Freepik
