Fast work North Africa is boosting its internet capacity by activating a new high-capacity subsea cable linking Egypt to Italy and France. The new Mediterranean subsea link on the 45 000 km 2Africa system, one of the longest subsea cable networks in the world, will facilitate capacity-intensive applications such as AI and cloud computing, according to Africa Business Communities. A collaboration between Telecom Egypt and Cisco, the Mediterranean subsea link uses Cisco’s advanced Network Convergence System to connect Port Said in Egypt and Marseille in France via Genoa in Italy. ‘By enhancing the capacity of our well-established subsea infrastructure, we are meeting the surging demand for bandwidth-intensive services such as cloud computing and AI across the Mediterranean and beyond,’ says Mohamed Nasr, CEO of Telecom Egypt. 4 February 2025 Image: Flickr
