    Financing future fuel

A fund focusing on the development of the green hydrogen value chain in South Africa has raised almost ZAR1 billion at first close

The South African blended finance private equity fund SA-H2 has secured commitments from a range of domestic and international private and public investors, including the European Commission under the Global Gateway; Invest International; South Africa’s Public Investment Corporation, on behalf of the Government Employees Pension Fund; Sanlam Life; and the Industrial Development Corporation. The fund is also being supported by the Development Bank of Southern Africa.

Engineering News reports that Climate Fund Managers, which manages the fund, sees the commitments as a reflection of the growing investor confidence in green hydrogen as an alternative fuel.

Among the fund’s beneficiaries are Green eFuels Producers’ wastewater-to-green-methanol plant in Gauteng, which is forecast to produce about 14 300 tons of green methanol annually from municipal sewage sludge, and the Hive Hydrogen Coega Green Ammonia Project in the Eastern Cape.

The fund manager says the fund hopes to attract a total of ZAR12 billion at final close by mid-2028.
