Egypt has high hopes for a new US$250 million hyper-scale data centre, the first of its kind to be built in the country.

Local IT infrastructure provider Benya Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with Khazna Data Centres of the UAE to form a joint venture to build the data centre at the Maadi Technology Park.

The data centre will have an estimated capacity of 25 MW of IT load, reports African Business Communities. With construction slated to start later this year, the data centre is expected to come online within three years.

It is the first in a series of data centres planned in Egypt by the two parties. They aim to create a data storage hub for the region as the country develops its digital economy.

‘The new hyper-scale data centre will not only meet the needs of the Egyptian market but also, through its extensive capabilities, serve African and Middle Eastern countries. It will contribute to attracting more investments for business sectors involving intensive operations, supporting cloud computing and content system operators,’ says Benya CEO Ahmed Mekky.
