Two major solar PV projects that will contribute 360 MW to South Africa’s electricity grid have received the financial go-ahead.

Both projects, which fall under the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement programme, are expected to come on line by mid-2026.

The US$120 million, 120 MW Doornhoek project, financed by Standard Bank and the Industrial Development Corporation, will generate 325 GWh a year, powering up 97 000 households in the Klerksdorp area, according to ESI Africa.

It is a joint project between AMEA Power and local companies Ziyanda Energy and 100% black-women-owned Dzimuzwo Energy.

The 240 MW Virginia Solar Park in north-eastern Free State will provide electricity to up to 240 000 homes.

Financed by Rand Merchant Bank, it is a collaboration between Red Rocket, investment holding company Reatile, equity partner Jade Sky Energy and the Red Rocket Opportunity Trust.
