The DRC’s Grand Inga hydropower scheme is getting back on track with the World Bank committing a total of US$1 billion to building the long-delayed Inga III.

An initial US$250 million will go towards funding studies, boosting economic development, reforming the state electricity company and attracting private developers for the facility on the Congo River, reports Moneyweb.

The 351 MW first phase of the Inga complex was commissioned in 1972, and a 1.4 GW second phase followed in 1982. Most of the electricity generated by Inga is transmitted 1 600km to power the country’s cobalt and copper mines.

It is estimated that Inga III, if completed, will generate 11GW of power and cost US$10 billion.

Under the World Bank-backed Mission 300 initiative, the DRC has committed to tripling access to electricity by 2030.
