Kenya is one step closer to fulfilling its Vision 2030 mission of creating a model smart green city.

Phase one of its flagship Konza Technopolis, about 60 km from Nairobi, is nearing completion, according to Africa Business Technologies.

Occupying about 1.6 ha, phase one of the technopolis is expected to accommodate more than 17 000 residents and workers.

The Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KTDA) says more than 80% of the horizontal infrastructure, including paved roads, drainage and street lighting, has been finalised.

The special economic zone has put sustainability at the forefront, featuring a wastewater reclamation facility capable of recycling up to 95% of treated water for reuse and an automated vacuum solid waste collection system. It aims to meet most of its energy needs through renewable sources, primarily solar, with potential for wind integration.

It aims to cater for the technology, R&D and academia, light manufacturing, commercial and residential sectors.

One of the anchor developments is the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, which will focus on postgraduate training in science, technology and engineering. A data centre is already operational and is offering cloud and colocation services to both government and private sector clients.

The second and third phases of the technopolis will expand the city’s footprint to accommodate more businesses, universities and residential areas. The total area of the completed project is expected to be in the region of 2 000 hectares, reports the KTDA.
