Nigeria’s biggest beer brewer is preparing to install a 650 kW solar plant at its brewery in the Oyo state capital, Ibadan. Nigerian Breweries (NB) owns brands such as Star (one of the country’s most popular beers) and it is a licensed producer of Heineken.

According to CrossBoundary Energy, the company that will manage and maintain the solar plant, the system will supply the facility with 1 GWh per annum and reduce the site’s CO2 emissions by more than 10 000 tons over its lifespan (around 25 years). As part of the service agreement with CrossBoundary Energy, the brewery will pay for the produced solar power only.

The move to solar forms part of NB’s Brewing a Better World initiative, and supports Heineken’s global ‘Drop the C’ programme for renewable energy, according to brewery MD, Jordi Borrut Bel. The latter project aims to increase the brand’s use of renewable energy in production to 70% by 2030.
