Three East African countries – Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda – are to benefit from a five-year programme to beef up their resilience to climate change, following a EUR39.5 million grant from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Africa Business Communities, the Climate Smart Agriculture programme is led by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, in partnership with Wageningen University and Research, the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centres’ Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security Programme, Agriterra and Rabo Partnerships.

The programme hopes to improve the income of 300 000 medium-sized and small-scale producers by 2022, as well as improve the business performance of 50 SMEs and 30 co-operatives in a bid to mitigate the risks of climate change to their supply chains.

Meike van Ginneken, CEO of SNV, says the grant ‘will help us scale up our support to farmer communities to feed their families and increase their income’.
