Power boost Plans for Kenya’s first nuclear energy plant are reportedly at an advanced stage. The 1 000 MW facility will be built in Luanda Kotieno, Bondo, at an estimated cost of US$3.8 billion, according to The Deep Dive. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with commissioning expected between 2032 and 2034. Justus Wabuyabo, CEO of Kenya’s Nuclear Power and Energy Agency, told ESI Africa that once the plant is operational, the government plans on rolling out more nuclear facilities in Kilifi and Kwale counties and envisages setting up small modular reactors (SMRs) in every county. ‘With SMRs, we can establish compact nuclear power plants across all counties. This will guarantee sufficient electricity, support industrial growth, and boost economic transformation,’ Wabuyabo said. It is hoped the project will decrease the country’s reliance on electricity imports. Wabuyabo stressed the project was a long-term investment for the country and would reduce energy costs for Kenyans. 9 September 2025 Image: Unsplash
