Power play A 900 MW hybrid renewable energy complex is taking shape in Mpumalanga, South Africa, with the 155 MW wind energy component reaching financial close. The ZAR5 billion wind energy plant forms part of Seriti Green’s much larger Ummbila Emoyeni complex, which will incorporate wind, solar and battery storage, and is being built in phases across 27 000 ha. Seriti Green has now signed a 15-year offtake deal for the wind energy plant with licensed energy trader Energy Exchange of Southern Africa (Exsa). Exsa was licensed by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa in 2022, enabling it to buy renewable energy in bulk under long-term contracts with independent power producers for resale to corporates. The wind energy farm, featuring 25 wind turbines, is expected to have production capacity of 525 GWh a year. 12 August 2025 Image: Unsplash
