Close to 30 healthcare facilities in Gauteng now have access to a secure supply of electricity, enabling them to provide essential life-giving services despite load shedding.

The provincial government has installed rooftop solar PV systems and battery storage at 11 public hospitals, nine primary healthcare clinics and eight community healthcare facilities around the province.

The combined installed capacity of the solar PV systems is more than 6 MWh, with an extra 15 MWh from battery storage, reports Engineering News.

The project was funded by national government and is part of the province’s Emergency Energy Response programme.

Gauteng human settlements and infrastructure development MEC Lebogang Maile said the roll-out created 237 direct jobs, 187 indirect jobs and 50 expanded public works programme jobs.

Another 26 non-priority healthcare facilities in the province are slated for solar PV installations, which will be rolled out once funding was confirmed, according to Maile.
