State-owned electricity utility Kenya Power and Lighting Company is ramping up its involvement in promoting e-mobility, investing almost US$2 million over the next three years.

In addition to setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in several centres around the country, Kenya Power is switching out its current fleet with EVs and electric motorbikes, reports Afrik21.

It recently launched its second charging station, this one at the Stima Plaza in Nairobi. The US$48 500 facility includes two chargers – a 50 kW DC for one hour’s charging and a 22 kW AC for two hours. Its first station is located at Kenya Power’s depot in Ruaraka. Both are open to the public for use by EV owners.

According to Kenya Power CEO Joseph Siror, ‘alongside our need to charge our electric vehicles, we intend to use our EV charging stations to collect data that will inform the next steps of our support to the growing e-mobility industry’.
