Powering up Namibia is consolidating its position on the continent as a leader in the green hydrogen economy. Government has given the go-ahead to a solar-powered green hydrogen project near the Namib Naukluft Park, Erongo Region, reports ESI Africa. Zhero Molecules Walvis Bay received approval for its 3 GW Zhero Molecules Walvis Bay project last week after achieving environmental clearance. The project will manufacture green ammonia via electrolysis, using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The solar PV facility will serve to ensure that the ammonia produced is carbon-free and sustainable. Namibia is creating a green hydrogen hub in Walvis Bay, launching Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s Hydrogen Dune facility in September Featuring a 6.5 ha solar park; a hydrogen production facility equipped with a 5 MW PEM electrolyser and a 5.9 MWh battery energy storage system; and a hydrogen refuelling station, the Hydrogen Dune plant directly harnesses solar energy to produce hydrogen, which is then made available at the refuelling station for trucks and heavy-duty applications. 14 October 2026 Image: Unsplash
