Guiding the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) technology on the continent is the focus of the newly established Africa AI Council.

Launched by the 40-member Smart Africa Alliance, the 15-member council will comprise representatives from government and the private sector as well as AI experts from civil society and academia, reports Africa Business Communities.

Smart Africa CEO Lacina Koné says the establishment of the council is a significant step towards realising Africa’s potential in the AI-driven global economy.

‘AI is not just technology to us, it’s an African arrow that, when thrown with the right ethical frameworks and inclusive policies, can pierce the way to African digital prosperity and resilience for the benefit of every citizen,’ he says.

The Smart Africa Alliance – formed by AU heads of state a decade ago to drive ICT policy – believes the continent, which has the fastest-growing and youngest population, will be able to design a future workforce based on AI technology.

The Gates Foundation is providing start-up funding to the alliance to develop the council’s strategy.

Already under development are an AI governance toolkit, a talent readiness index and a framework for the Pan African AI Research Centre that will underpin the council’s work.
