Strong signal East Africa’s connectivity is getting a boost with the unveiling of a strategic fibre route in the region. The 260 km national long distance (NLD) fibre route from Mombasa in Kenya to Kampala, Uganda, runs along the Uganda Railway Corridor, reports Africa Business Communities. It provides a direct, low-latency connection to Kenya’s broader internet infrastructure, which ultimately connects into Bayobab’s subsea cable systems in Mombasa. ‘This is not just fibre in the ground – it’s a new pathway for digital transformation across East Africa,’ said Sylvia Anampiu, MD of Bayobab Kenya, at the unveiling of the line. The route was laid from December 2024 to February 2025. By laying the fibre along the railway corridor, it is protected from road-related disruptions, and thus it provides secure, stable interconnectivity. 13 May 2025 Image: Pexels
