Taking shape KwaZulu-Natal’s goal of developing its automotive sector has been propelled forward with the establishment of a vehicle assembly facility by Indian vehicle manufacturer Mahindra. Engineering News reports that the R70-million assembly plant, sited at the Dube TradePort special economic zone near Durban, will produce more than 1 000 Mahindra Pik Up single- and double-cab models a month. The ISO 9000-accredited plant, located close to Mahindra’s original 2018 assembly site, takes advantage of the proximity to the King Shaka International Airport and the Dube cargo terminal for the expedited import of components from India. ‘This connectivity was a major selling point for establishing the assembly [plant] here. It aligns with our goal of integrating logistics and production in one precinct,’ said eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba. ‘The aerotropolis provided the launching pad and Mahindra’s investment is a rocket taking off from it. As more businesses like Mahindra set up around the airport, we move closer to our vision of a dynamic, diversified economy centred on this logistics gateway.’ Mahindra is also reportedly investigating the feasibility of setting up a full-scale manufacturing plant in South Africa. 19 August 2025 Image: Unsplash
