An estimated US$500 million is to be invested over a decade to develop almost 25 hectares in Kenya’s Tatu City special economic zone (SEZ).

The investment, by African real estate developer Business Bay Square, will include homes, green spaces, recreation areas, retail, offices and logistics facilities in the SEZ, which is taking shape 20 km north of Nairobi. It will also include a mosque, reports African Business Communities.

‘The future of development is moving beyond the [Nairobi] city centre, where there’s space to build holistic communities with everything people need – schools, offices, entertainment, shops, and extensive recreation. Tatu City offers exactly that: a well-planned environment free from congestion and the hassles of commuting,’ said Business Bay Square founder Abdiweli Hassan.

Tatu City, the brain child of developer Rendeavour, now hosts more than 100 companies and is home to about 25 000 people.

More than US$3.5 billion has been invested in the SEZ, with businesses setting up shop there including Emirates Logistics, Heineken, Kärcher, Naivas, Freight Forwarders Solutions, and ADvTECH.
