Namibia is stepping up efforts to improve telecommunication services in its underserved rural areas.

The country is spending N$163 million to install communication towers in the northern parts of the country.

ITWeb reports that it is erecting towers at 42 sites in Kavango West, the country’s least-connected region, which currently has only nine towers.

Telecom Namibia CEO Stanley Shanapinda says N$20 million will be spent annually on the upkeep and operation of the towers.

The project is being funded through a universal service fund set up by the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia in March 2025.

Shanapinda said planning for the installation is at a preliminary stage and detailed site surveys will be required to refine and validate the cost estimates.
