Cold comfort Logistics infrastructure serving the port of Cape Town has seen another boost, the second in one month. A fortnight after the launch of phase one of Grindrod’s new container depot in Salt River, Maersk has officially opened its ZAR800 million Belcon Cold Store facility in Bellville, Cape Town. It is part of the logistics company’s ZA1.72 billion investment in cold chain storage facilities in South Africa, including the Cato and PreCool cold stores in KwaZulu-Natal, reports Engineering News. The logistics hub, which began operating earlier this year, was built to improve the handling of the Western Cape’s agricultural and fruit exports. The facility comprises the cold store and a depot, with room for a second phase expansion. The cold store features 10 088 pallet positions, 240 reefer plug points, seven loading docks, 248 container wash bays, six holding rooms and six sterile chambers. Maersk says it is planning to build a 2.2 MW solar PV plant at the site in 2026. 4 November 2025 Image: Unsplash
