With demand for the red metal still on the rise, Angola’s first major copper mine is scheduled to start production at the end of October.

The Tetelo mine is owned by Shining Star Icarus, a joint venture between China’s Shining Star International Group and the Angolan Copper Mining Society, Reuters reports.

The US$250 million mine is expected to produce 25 000 tons of concentrate during its first two years of operation, according to Ecofin Agency.

The copper mine, situated in northern Angola, is in line with the Angolan government’s plans to diversify away from oil extraction, which contributes the lion’s share (2022: 87%) of its GDP.

Shining Star Icarus deputy MD Rui Lopes said the first phase of the mine will be an open-pit operation, with underground mining starting in the second half of 2026.
