The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has been selected to co-ordinate the work on drawing up a Phase 1 master plan for South Africa’s West Coast green hydrogen project.

The organisation will oversee work on a plan for the development of a green hydrogen hub centred on the Saldanha Bay Special Economic Zone, which is known as Freeport Saldanha, according to a report in Engineering News.

‘This master plan is being developed in a collaborative manner that brings together key stakeholders from the three spheres of government, parastatals such as the Transnet National Ports Authority, private sector and civil society,’ says CSIR research group leader Paul Lochner.

Phase one of the master plan is aimed developing an understanding of the opportunities, priorities and constraints regarding common-user infrastructure, the requirement for land and a review of the energy and environmental legislation. In addition, it will draw up a strategic environmental analysis to direct future planning.
